There is so much unknown about mental health disorders in the science world, which makes it even harder for the bearer of the illness.
We live in a time where mental differences are being stigmatized, joked about, explored and revered. It is so confusing for all of us. I have experienced symptoms since I was 12/13 years old and even now I don't truly have the answers I need. "Why do I have BPD? Is it passed down through generations or does it attach to genomes and passed through specific DNA match ups?" Sadly, we do not have definitive proof one way or the other. So, until then, we have the DSM 5.
This is only a small bit of information that is available online here. The DSM's are the book of medical health diagnosis. If you have questions on A.D.D, Autism, O.C.D, BPD... much of this document can help.
